Essential Emotional Experiences
Additional Information
Essential Emotional Experiences (E3) was recorded between 2004 to 2006. While Acid Pro was used for all drums and percussion, some keyboards and guitars were realized as well using the software. All other musical bits (including all bass guitars and some keyboards and guitars) were played live.
This CD picks up where Baker’s Dozen left off. In fact the first 2 songs to get finished (“Happy Girl” and “Right In The Fo’Head”, originally entitled “Tupersramp”) were left over from the ‘Catalina’ sessions. (see Baker’s Dozen CD page) Everything after that started going in a slightly different direction. While Baker’s Dozen was specifically “all loops, all the time”, I approached E3 with more of a ‘live’ music feel. For me it was easier to write bass lines on the bass guitar instead of trying to manipulate bass loops. The recording process was also sped up a bit with this approach.
My daughter’s photos proved to be the very thing to help make this CD seem more like an album. I found the cover photo in a collection she had from a trip to my wife’s sister’s house in east San Diego county (CA). As soon as I saw it I knew it would make a great CD cover. You can check out more of her work here.
This CD tracks like a vinyl record, with a definite ‘Side 1’ and ‘Side 2’ feel. The first 7 songs are separate tracks and run for total 30 minutes. The last 5 songs on the CD makeup a mini suite which runs another 30 minutes. This ‘Side 2’ captures the underlying theme of the CD, exploring our many emotions with music.
...and I quote, “How do we first hear music in our thoughts? Is it organized? Is it fluid? This collection of notes attempts to render tangible the idle activities of an average mind. This ordering of musical tones reveals the building blocks of that which is essential, that which could be emotional, that which will be experienced.” (taken from an online posting of the song Essential Emotional Experiences on AcidPlanet.com)
