Baker’s Dozen was recorded during 2003 and 2004 and is all instrumental. I had just started working with Sony Media’s Acid Pro software (at that time the product was still owned by Sonic Foundry) and I began to put together little tunes using the various loops available. Once I got the hang of manipulating the pitch and the time if a loop segment independently the songs just started coming.
A few of the songs that wound up on Baker’s Dozen started out as experimental tunes I wrote while on vacation with my family in Catalina. I would spend all day at the beach, or doing other water activities, then spend most of the night working on songs. This is how “Techdance”, “Mix It Up”, “Ancient Call” and “After Symphony” got started.
Since this was my first ‘original music’ CD (Christmas Sounds was a collection of songs I did not write), I spent quite a bit of time coming up with song titles. Some songs were easy to name, like “Computer Science Fair”. This had been part of a music background tune for my oldest daughter’s Jr. High Science Fair project which involved the use of her computer. “Run” and “Piano Sketch” were similarly easy to name. “Sunday Morning Drive” however kept me guessing for a while. I think that was the last song to get a title. Also, the CD title was a mystery for a long time. Once I figured out there were 13 songs though, the title came quickly.
As is noted above, this CD is all about loops. I had many opportunities to add in live music tracks but I decided to keep everything as ‘pure’ as possible. There are, however, 2 songs that do in fact feature my bass playing and some guitar work. The song “8 Ball Corner” was created from audio tracks for another song I had recorded. I lifted the ‘wah-wah’ guitar parts and 1 bass note from those tracks to form the guitar and bass tracks. The entire bass track for “Eve Rybo Dy” was constructed from samples of my playing. The skill I learned while completing this CD proved to be a wonderful starting point for the follow up CD, Essential Emotional Experiences.
